Instructional Practices and Student Motivation: A Mixed-Methods Study
A mixed-methods research study examining which instructional practices most effectively generate motivation among high school students. Using Self-Determination Theory as a framework, the study analyzed survey data from 78 students alongside semi-structured interviews with teachers and administrators to compare the efficacy of intrinsic motivators (autonomy, relevance, feedback, progress monitoring) and extrinsic motivators (grades, prizes, badges). Findings highlighted teacher-directed practices, positive feedback, and student-teacher relationships as the strongest motivational factors, while identifying systemic barriers such as class size and teacher burnout as implementation challenges.
Format: Academic research paper (APA format)
Context: Graduate coursework — EDF5442: Inquiry and Measurement for Practitioners, FSU
Conditions: Developed independently as a course deliverable. Research design, data collection instruments, and analysis were self-directed within course parameters. Mixed-method convergent parallel design used to triangulate quantitative survey data (n=78) with qualitative interview data.
Scope: Course deliverable. Not published externally. Demonstrates ability to design and conduct original educational research.
Role: Sole researcher — designed study, developed instruments, collected and analyzed data, and authored the full paper.
Grammar and Usage: A Video Lesson for Language Arts Classrooms
A recorded instructional video lesson designed to teach grammar and usage concepts to Language Arts students. The lesson demonstrates how technology can be used as a delivery medium for direct instruction, applying principles of multimedia learning and instructional design to a traditional academic subject area.
Format: Video lesson (.wmv)
Context: Graduate coursework — EME5602: Technology and Design, FSU
Conditions: Developed independently as a course deliverable. Content, instructional approach, and production were self-directed. Designed to demonstrate the application of technology as an instructional medium within a K–12 Language Arts context.
Scope: Course deliverable. Demonstrates ability to design and produce technology-mediated instruction for classroom use.
Role: Instructional designer and producer — sole contributor.
Humane Society Foster Dog Adoption Event
A community event conceived, organized, and managed independently to support foster dog adoption through the local Humane Society. The flyer demonstrates the planning, promotion, and coordination work involved in launching a new community initiative — from identifying a need and securing organizational partnership to designing promotional materials and managing event logistics.
Format: Event flyer (PDF)
Context: Graduate coursework — EME5602: Technology and Design, FSU
Conditions: Developed as a course deliverable for EME5602. Required identifying a community need, establishing a partnership with an external organization, coordinating logistics, and designing promotional materials to drive attendance and awareness.
Scope: Course deliverable. Demonstrates ability to plan, manage, and promote a program from concept to execution — including external partnership coordination and promotional design.
Role: Initiator, planner, and coordinator — sole contributor.
The Ripple Effect: A Learning Game Prototype
A prototype design document for an original educational game called The Ripple Effect. The game applies game-based learning principles to create an engaging, scenario-driven experience that teaches cause-and-effect thinking and decision-making. The prototype document outlines the game concept, learning objectives, mechanics, and instructional rationale — demonstrating the ability to translate learning theory into an interactive, learner-centered design.
Format: Game prototype description (PDF)
Context: Graduate coursework — EME5614: Design of Learning Games, FSU
Conditions: Designed independently as a course deliverable. Game concept, mechanics, learning objectives, and instructional rationale were self-directed. Grounded in game-based learning theory and instructional design principles.
Scope: Course deliverable. Demonstrates ability to apply instructional design theory to non-traditional, interactive learning formats.
Role: Instructional designer and game designer — sole contributor.
